2019 Events in Whitby

Now that this season has come to an end many of you are already thinking about booking your holidays for next year. To help you decide on some dates to visit Whitby I am going to give you a list of upcoming events in the area that we know about for 2019. Some of these events prove very popular and our accommodation and touring pitches do fill up extremely fast, so if there are any dates you would like to come and stay with us, then I would recommend you don’t leave it too long before booking.

Saturday 9^th

Jason Donovan and his Amazing Midlife Crisis Tour at Whitby Pavilion

Jason Donovan is extending hi Amazing Midlife Crisis Tour into 2019 with a final series of dates. This is a tour with a twist!! These intimate evenings will be a unique opportunity to see him like you’ve never seen him before.

Celebrating his 50th birthday and with a wealth of tantalising tales under his belt, this autobiographical show will zigzag back and forth through his life, with stories about Neighbours, Ten Good Reasons, Kylie, Joseph, I'm A Celebrity, Strictly and much, much more.

Hear some new stories (and possibly one or two you’ve heard before!) plus some of the songs you know and love for a night like no other!

Psychic Sally 

 10 Year Anniversary Tour at Whitby Pavilion

World-renowned psychic, television and theatre star and the UK’s favourite award-winning medium Sally Morgan is back and better than ever with her phenomenal interactive 10-year anniversary show. 

Sally is one of the UK’s most successful touring acts and has been wowing audiences across the country for the past 10 years. Sally’s jaw-dropping show has attracted amazing reviews from theatregoers and psychic fans.

The messages from beyond come thick and fast. Funny, entertaining, touching, sometimes heart-breaking, often controversial; The 10 year anniversary tour showcases the phenomenal ability of the nation’s best-loved medium.

Sally says ‘The shows will be psychic dynamite and although they are undoubtedly entertaining, there is also a very serious side, which is to give audience members messages of hope and love from the other side’.

Friday 12th - Sunday 14th
Spring Goth Weekend

WGW is held twice a year in Whitby with this being the first one. It began being held twice a year in 1997 and it is now one of the largest Goth events in the world. It attracts visitors from all over the UK and the world.

Most of the events are held at Whitby's Spa Pavilion. There are other venues used throughout the town but “The Spa” is the main location. 

The festival is open to any one of any age.  The event has been good for the economy of Whitby, no doubt leading to the warm welcome to the WGW each year. For restaurants, bars, hotels and other businesses in the area, the festival generates about 1.1 million pounds.

Always a very popular time to take a holiday as a lot of people have it as their first break of the year after Winter.

Tomorrow's Ghosts Gothic Festival

Tomorrow’s Ghosts Festival is a celebration of all things Gothic whilst embracing a wide range of alternative culture. The Festival aims to host both established and up and coming bands to reflect the diversity of the goth and alternative music scene as well as diversifying into film, art and spoken word.

Tomorrow’s Ghosts aims to be an inclusive event where everyone is welcome. They are committed to supporting charities through the event as well as supporting other events across the town which all contribute to the experience of visiting Whitby for the Biannual Goth Festival.

Saturday 18th - Sunday 19th
Fish & Chip Festival

What did sailors eat on long voyages? How was food prepared in rough weather when the stove could not be lit, and was it all as horrible as popular legend suggests? Sailors certainly had to eat salt beef, ships biscuits (and weevils too!) but there was much more. Cook had an unrivalled reputation for feeding his men well and keeping them healthy.

This exhibition explores food on Cook's voyages: what stores were taken, how food was preserved, how it was served, and what extra food was caught or gathered during the long voyage. There are many surprises. Imagine Cook using fine china at his table for his fellow officers and distinguished guests! Imagine the young explorer, Joseph Banks, equipping himself for expeditions on land and sea with a portable cooking apparatus, including a travelling pepper pot and nutmeg grater!

With the help of generous loans from Skaill House, Orkney, the Royal Geographical Society, London, and several regional museums, the exhibition opens an unexpected window on eating and food in the 18th century. The 'Fish & Ships' programme is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

July

Northern Soul Weekend

Located in the Spa Pavilion on West Cliff this event offers you daytime sessions plus Soul nights spread over three days featuring the best in Northern Soul, Motown and Modern Soul with the North's best loved DJ's

There are two huge rooms, offering Northern Soul Classics and Motown favourites on a superb dance floor.

Saturday 13th

 Lime Lizzy (Thin Lizzy Tribute Act)

Renowned for an action-packed pyrotechnic-fuelled explosion of a show, Limehouse Lizzy continue to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide.

Attention to detail and charismatic audience interaction have led to their performances being described as “beyond tribute”, by both audiences and critics alike. Throw in a stunning replica of the famous Lizzy mirrored, LED-lit backdrop, huge hung banners with the image of the man himself, Phil Lynott, and pyro explosions galore and you could be witnessing ‘Live & Dangerous’ before your very eyes!

Expect the usual razzamatazz and classic tracks such as ‘The Boys are Back in Town’, ’Whiskey In The Jar’ and many others we’ve come to expect from one of the most highly rated acts on the circuit

August

Saturday 10th - Monday 12th
Whitby Regatta

The Whitby Regatta  presents to you a full weekend of entertainment, embracing yacht racing, rowing races and various free forms of entertainment as published in the official programme, finishing with a prize presentation and spectacular firework display.

With over one hundred and seventy years of aquatic competition and entertainment the Whitby Regatta is probably the oldest sea Regatta on the northeast coast and has drawn large crowds into Whitby over the years.

Saturday 17th - Friday 23rd
Folk Festival

There is a series of extra special events for you in 2019. Come along to experience several unique and spellbinding events.

Choose from over 300 concerts over seven days spread across 50 venues. There will be over 100 fantastic concert artists ready to entertain you.

Try your hand at anything from Melodeon to Medieval Dance, Banjo to Border, or join the Festival Orchestra. 

Perform your new found skills at the Workshop Showcase in the main venue, the Spa Pavilion.

For the youngsters there is a ‘Kids club’ with Ray & Bev Langton o

r you could watch your children transform a folk tale into a piece of drama at the ‘Children in Performance’ club.

Whitby Folk Week is great fun for youths and teenagers. For 2019 there is a Yoof Club with Bryony & Will (working with dance teams and artists), a 3-day ceilidh band workshop for teenagers, and a special youth ceilidh with Polkaworks.

There will be some of the best traditional dance teams performing around Whitby every afternoon. There’s also a chance to see all the teams perform in the Sunday Dance Extravaganza in the Spa Pavilion, and plenty of opportunities to learn from them through a series of workshops throughout the week.

During the week, Whitby’s best pubs and clubs are jam packed with music sessions and singarounds of all genres.

Wednesday 21st

Egton Agricultural Show

Egton is one of the largest village shows in the country run by a band of voluntary helpers.  The showground is open from 8:30am with the first judging in the main ring at 8:45am through to 5pm. 

From the A171 Whitby to Guisborough Road, take the turning for Egton. Arriva will be running a bus, which leaves Langbourne Road, Whitby at 9.30, is at Aislaby at 9.39 and arrives at Egton 9.50. This is repeated every hour until 17.30. Buses back from Showfield are at 9.55 then every hour until 17.55 (back in Whitby at 15 mins past the hour.)

September

Friday 6th - Sunday 8th

Pirate Festival

Please note this date is provisional.

A weekend full of fun, live music, kids entertainment and swashbuckling all in aid of the RNLI. Dust off your eye-patches and head to Whitby for a few days of swashbuckling fun for all the family.

10am-6pm: All ages

There will be live music, pirate themed activities; games, treasure hunting, face-paints, craft tent, appearances from some familiar kids characters, best dressed pirate and more.

7.30pm-Late: 18+

After a long day skirmishing and plundering there is chance to enjoy some grub and grog; The evening will see the first Buccaneers banquet followed by the Smugglers Ball.

October

Friday 18th - Sunday 20th
Musicport

Now it’s 19th year Musicport has an international reputation for the quality and diversity of the artists it books for what is one of the most intimate, friendly and trouble-free events in the most stunning of settings perched above the beach . All indoors, with 6 stages in one venue and over 50 acts. Being in the half term the festival is very family-friendly and the festival goes on tour to the local villages on the Monday to Friday following the main event. 

Acts previously booked include Buena Vista Social Club, Richard Hawley, Mahotella Queens, Lemn Sissay, Idlewild, Seckou Keita and Catrin Finch, Rachid Taha, Toumani Diabate, The Levellers, Misty In Roots, Courtney Pine, Richard Hawley, Hugh Masekela, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Chumbawamba, Mory Kante, Los De Abajo, Arthur Brown & The Blockheads.

Friday 25th - Sunday 27th

Autumn Goth Weekend

The timing of this Goth Weekend usually coincides with the Illuminated Abbey  which they have every year in October. This weekend is extremely popular with tourists and locals alike, and the diversity of costumes you will see as you wander through the quaint cobbled streets will amaze you.  If you have never been before you will be delighted with everything this weekend brings.

I'm sure there are many other events in Whitby that I haven't mentioned yet but if you keep an eye on our Facebook page then I will post updates as these events release their dates. There are usually a couple of 60's weekends, Steam Punk weekends and many other events to look out for.
