Reasons To Visit Whitby

Whitby has a great deal to offer people from all walks of life. It doesn't matter what your interests are because Whitby has something to please practically everyone on some level.

FOOD & DRINK

If you enjoy eating out then you will love the huge variety of restaurants Whitby has to offer. There are Indian restaurants, a Thai restaurant, a Chinese restaurant, Fine dining restaurants, proper fish restaurants serving fresh locally caught fish, great pubs serving excellent food, local hotels offering great food and of course our very own Saltwick Bay Cafe that we have here at Whitby Holiday Park which serves excellent home cooked meals all day.

If you fancy something a bit more casual then there are numerous chip shops and takeaways available. Some takeaways will even deliver to the park for you allowing you even more relaxation time in your caravans, just ask in reception for more details.

SIGHTSEEING

Just a short walk from the park is the magnificent sight of Whitby Abbey which is definitely worth a visit if you are staying with us. They have various activities throughout the year to keep both children & adults entertained. October is especially nice as they have the Abbey open in the night for their illumination displays.

Next to the Abbey there is St Mary's Church which is rumoured to be the burial place of Dracula and the views from the churchyard are superb. The church itself is open to the public and at Christmas time it gets filled with Christmas trees from all the local Whitby businesses. It's definitely worth a visit.

After the church you can enjoy the views as you make your way down the famous 199 steps into the old town of Whitby which is very quaint with it's cobbled streets and interesting shops.

You can walk down to the end of both of Whitby's Piers, but the lighthouse on the west pier is open to the public so you can enjoy the fantastic views over Whitby.

Up on West Cliff there is a statue of Captain Cook and the famous Whale Bone arch. It is very popular to have your picture taken at the Whale bones with the iconic Abbey in the background.

Whitby's viaduct is quite an impressive sight. It is estimated that it took around 5 million bricks to build, is 125ft high, 915ft long and consists of 13 arches.

ATTRACTIONS

If Captain Cook is of interest to you there is a museum in Whitby where you can find out lots more about him and his adventures.

Whitby is world famous for it's Dracula connection. Bram Stoker got his inspiration from seeing the Abbey shrouded in mist and there is a bench dedicated to him on Khyber Pass. There is also the Dracula experience in Whitby.

THINGS TO DO

There are always different events happening in The Spa Pavillion e.g. live music, plays, shows etc. Keep an eye on the Spa Pavillion web site for more information.

There is a the Pirate ship which will take you on a trip around the bay.

As well as the cinema we have on site in the Galleon Bar, there is also a cinema in the Spa Pavillion in Whitby.

The Galleon Bar on site also regularly holds bingo and race nights amongst other entertaining evenings. Throughout the Summer season we have live acts performing on weekends too.

Steam trains run regularly throughout the Summer. Timetables can be picked up from reception here on the park.

There always seems to be something happening in Whitby with 60's weekends, soul weekends, Goth weekends and many more. One of the most popular events of the year is the annual regatta which takes place in August. If you want to stay with us during any of the events in Whitby it is highly recommended that you book well in advance as these events are becoming more and more popular every year.

If you like fishing there are boats that take tourists out for the day on fishing trips. If you prefer to fish off the shore then Saltwick Bay beach is ideal. It runs direct from the park so you don't even have to worry about taking the car out as it's just a 2 minute walk.

Saltwick Bay Beach which is also great for the children to have a play and to go fossil hunting. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year too which is an added bonus.

There are so many local areas for great walks. One of the best walks is right on our doorstep and that is the Cleveland Way foot path which runs for 110 miles in total. We are situated between Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay so if you are staying with us you can go either way. The path to Whitby is a mile and the path to Robin Hood's Bay is 6 miles (don't tell anyone, but I cheat by walking to Robin Hood's Bay and catching the bus back to Whitby. Shhhh!).

So, as you can see there is plenty for everyone at Whitby. If you would like to enjoy the delights of Whitby then why not book to stay with us.
