Whitby Regatta

This month sees the return of one of Whitby's most popular events, one that has been going on for well over a hundred years.  In actual fact, this year will be the 176th Whitby Regatta (the oldest sea regatta on the northeast coast!)

Year in year out Whitby celebrates the regatta out at sea with the traditional rowing races between rival clubs, then finishes with a carnival on land with a big firework display.

This year sees the Regatta fall on the weekend of Friday 19th, Saturday 20th, Sunday 21st and Monday 22nd August.

All the fun and excitement gets under way on Saturday 20th August.  The rowing races start around 1pm with the Ladies 16-23 category getting things underway.  After them comes the Girls under 14 and the Boys under 14 categories, followed by the Girls and Boys under 18s with the Men's Senior Novice race closing the racing for the day.

As well as all the rowing races, there is also plenty going on up on the cliffs of Whitby, as well as on the beaches.  There's everything from Tombola stalls to Whitby Classic Motor Car club, as well as children's entertainers and the local radio station, Yorkshire Coast Radio.  Whitby even has it's own Grand Baby competition and Glamorous Granny competition!!

At 5.15pm on Saturday, there is the annual Regatta Sail Past, followed by the Lifeboat Launch.  Immediately following this is the much anticipated Greasy Pole!!  If you're feeling brave and reckon you can make it all the way to the end to retrieve the flag, then why not sign up and have a go!!  Only a few have managed, most get beaten by the pole!

Sunday sees the return of the Fun run and the Scrufts Dog show, as well as the Vintage Tractors, Post War Motor Cycles and Post War Classic Car rally.   The rowing races on Sunday are as follows: Girls and Boys under 16s, Ladies Senior and Men's over 30s.

Sunday night sees the arrival of the funfair which sets up along the West pier, completely transforming the place!  All the rides open around 10am and are open all day right through until late.

As well as the fun fair, there are also plenty of stalls that set up down pier road, down the pier itself and all the way up Khyber Pass.  These are there all day selling all sorts of bargains!

And to finish the whole event off is an amazing firework display from the East Pier.  This generally starts about 9.45pm, so make sure you find your perfect spot to see them from!!

Throughout the whole event there is a treasure hunt going on.  All you need to do is buy a Regatta programme, and inside there you will find your own unique number.  What you then need to do is walk all round the town, checking shop windows until you find your number.  Once you have found your number, go inside that shop and claim your prize!!

Programmes for the Regatta are on sale now in many shops and businesses around the town.  We also have them for sale in our shop and reception, so make sure you pop in and get yours!
