HOT CROSS BUN RECIPE FOR EASTER

HOT CROSS BUNS FOR EASTER!!

Hot Cross Buns! Hot Cross Buns! One a Penny, Two a Penny! Hot Cross Buns!

Ingredients

  • 300ml whole milk
  • zest 1 orange
  • 50g butter, cubed
  • 500g strong white flour, plus 140g for the crosses, and extra for dusting
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 85g golden caster sugar
  • 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast
  • 1 large egg, beaten, plus 1 egg to glaze
  • oil, for greasing
  • 100g dried mixed fruit

For the spiced honey butter

  • 200g salted butter, softened
  • 1½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • 4 tbsp clear honey

Method

  1. Warm the milk and orange zest in a small saucepan until steaming. Remove from the heat and add the butter, swirling the pan until the butter has melted and the milk has cooled to hand temperature.
  2. Mix the flour, cinnamon, sugar, yeast and 1 tsp salt in a large bowl. Pour in the milk mixture and the beaten egg, and mix with a wooden spoon until the mixture clumps together. Tip out onto your work surface and knead until smooth and elastic – the dough should bounce back when pressed with your finger. Transfer to a clean oiled bowl, cover with cling film or a tea towel and leave to rise for 2 hrs or until doubled in size.
  3. Dust your largest baking tray with flour. Tip the dough back onto your work surface and knead again to knock out any air bubbles. Add the dried fruit and knead to incorporate into the dough. Divide the dough into 11 equal pieces. Roll each lump of dough into a smooth ball. Arrange the balls on your tray in a ring, leaving a small gap between each one. Cover loosely with a piece of cling film and leave somewhere warm to prove again for a further 1 hr or until doubled in size, the buns should be just touching.
  4. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Brush the buns with a little beaten egg. Mix the remaining flour with enough water to make a thick paste, then transfer to a piping bag fitted with a small round nozzle, or use a sandwich bag and snip off one corner. Use the paste to pipe crosses over the buns – this is easiest if you pipe in one big circle, then put a line across the middle of each bun. Bake for 25 mins until golden and cooked through.
  5. Meanwhile, make the spiced honey butter. Put the butter, spices and honey in a bowl and beat with an electric whisk until smooth. Transfer to a bowl. When the buns are cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool for 10 mins on the baking tray. Serve the bun ring warm with the butter in the centre for spreading. The buns will keep for up to 3 days in a tin or freeze for up to 3 months.

CELEBRATE ST PATRICK'S DAY WITH US!!

CELEBRATE ST PATRICK'S DAY WITH US

Here is a little bit of history on St Patrick:

At Patrick is patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. St Patrick is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland.

The reason the shamrock is the National Flower of Ireland is because St Patrick used it to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagans.

St Patrick is most know for driving the snakes out of Ireland. Driving the snakes away was probably symbolic of putting an end to the pagan practices.

St Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning.

St Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

If you like to celebrate St Patrick's Day then why not book yourselves a little short break with us and sample a few Guinness in our Family Club. You can choose from staying on our touring park if you have your own touring caravan or motorhome, or treat yourself to a stay in one of our static caravans for that home from home feel.

A Seal's Life at Saltwick Bay

A SEAL'S LIFE AT SALTWICK BAY

I am a seal and live in the sea around the North East coast between Whitby and Scarborough.

I was christened by Neptune and called Of Approval.

I have swam and fished in these waters for the last five of your years.  I am good at avoiding fishing nets and divers and other man made things.  This winter the sea has been very rough and try as I might the strong waves washed me high up on to the beach at Saltwick Bay.  Luckily for me two of the people who run the caravan park at Saltwick Bay came down onto the beach with an old duvet and after a lot of biting and struggling, they managed to put me on to the duvet and carried me back into the sea.  I am now very happy back in the sea and would like to say Thank You to the Holiday Park staff so they can now say that Whitby Holiday Park has the Seal Of Approval!!

Ha Ha Ha

However, this is actually quite a serious matter and we do every now and then get seals washing ashore on the beach.  We do send staff down to check out the situation and always call the appropriate authorities to inform them of the situation so that hopefully all the seals that get washed up on the beach get the happy ending that Of Approval did.

Pet Friendly Caravans at Whitby Holiday Park

Are you wanting to go away on holiday but not sure what to do with your beloved pet? Have you struggled to find somewhere that has both the stunning views out over the north sea and is a home away from home, but is also somewhere where you can take your pet with you?  Then look no further!  Here at Whitby Holiday Park we offer all the above and more!

Situated on the cliff tops over looking Saltwick Bay, Whitby Holiday Park is ideally situated for those of you who like to take long walks with your beloved pets.  With the Cleveland Way footpath running right through the park, dog owners are spoilt for choice as to where they can take their dogs for a walk.

But before you even begin to think about walking your dog, you need to get your pet friendly caravan booked!!  Yes that's right, we have 10 pet friendly caravans available to hire on site, but don't leave it too late to book your caravan as our pet friendly caravans are very popular!!

We have two different types of pet friendly caravans available for you to hire ranging from 2 berths up to 6 berths.  We have our Pet Premium caravans which are 12ft wide and we have our Pet Standard caravans which are 10ft wide.  Both the premium and the Standard caravans come with central heating and double glazing.  They all have a bathroom with shower, kitchen with microwave and oven, tv with freesat and a dvd player, so it literally is your home away from home.

Our two berth caravan is slightly smaller than our other pet friendly caravans but it still has all the comforts of a home away from home.  This caravan is ideal for a couple and their dog who are wanting a break from everyday life.

All our Pet Friendly caravans are cleaned to a very high standard.

Our Pet friendly caravans are situated all over the park with some having partial sea views and some having views of the Abbey.  We also have one which is situated right in the center of the park which means it is close to all the facilities.

And don't forget there is the lovely Cleveland Way footpath where you can walk your dog for miles zig zagging in and out and up and down along the cliff top.  If you go one way out of the park it will take you to the picturesque village of Robin Hoods Bay and if you go the other it will lead you to the famous Whitby Abbey and the 199 steps!

But don't forget we also have access to our own private beach where dogs are allowed all year round for that all important bit of daily exercise, for both owners and pets!  And if you time it right with the tide, you might possibly be able to see one of the two wrecks that are situated not far off the shore of Saltwick Bay!

And don't worry, if you fancy a night in the Family Club after an exhausting trip on the beach, you can take your beloved pet with you as they are allowed in the bottom two rooms.  If you are unsure exactly where to go then just ask a member of staff who will be happy to show you.

So, if you are looking for that special somewhere to go for a holiday and cant bear to leave your pet at home, pick up the phone and call Whitby Holiday Park today on 01947 602664 to get your Pet Friendly caravan booked before they all go!!

Armed Forces Day 2014

ARMED FORCES DAY
SATURDAY 28TH JUNE 2014

Armed Forces Day gives everyone the opportunity to do two things: 1. to raise awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces; 2. it gives us as a nation a chance to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving troops to service families and from veterans to cadets!

As well as there being a National event in Stirling, many towns and cities across the length and breadth of the country will be holding their own events to show their support.

And here at Whitby Holiday Park we will also be showing our support by having a fun filled day with plenty of activities going on around the Park, as well as that all important one minutes silence.  It will also be a fundraising day where any funds raised on the day will go to our chosen charity for this year which is the very fitting Help For Heroes!!A charity which will touch all of us at some point in our lives.

So why not get yourselves booked on to Whitby Holiday Park for the weekend, whether it be in your touring caravan or in one of our static caravans; we have something here to suit everyone.

Both Whitby and Scarborough will be holding events to mark Armed Forces Day.  Like last year, there will be a parade through Whitby of both currently serving men and women and veterans of the Armed Forces.  The parade finishes at the new war memorial by the dock side in the center of town, where everyone congregates for a short service and a minutes silence.  But if your looking for something a bit bigger, then you need to head on down to Scarborough where they are hoping to build on the success of their Armed Forces day last year.

In 2013, huge crowds were treated to extraordinary displays from the R.A.F's very own aeronautical acrobats, the world famous Red Arrows, an R.A.F Typhoon and the Battle of Britain memorial flight comprising of a Spitfire, Hurricane and the much loved Lancaster Bomber!!  It looks like the Armed Forces day in 2013 will be a hard one to beat, but the 2014 Armed Forces Day is looking just as good!!

Also in conjunction with Scarborough Armed Forces Day 2014, Scarborough Borough Council in association with National Holidays is proud to present the Best of British in a spectacular Armed Forces Day Last Night of the Proms concert live at the Scarborough open Air Theater.  The concert is hosted by Aled Jones and includes performances by Laura Wright; Only Men Allowed and the Military Wives Choir of York.

What a way to end a remarkable and emotional day!!  But don't forget to book your tickets for the concert and to book your pitch or caravan here at Whitby Holiday Park as spaces are now starting to go!!

If you are unable to to make it to us for this wonderful event there's no need to worry as all of the fundraising that we are doing in 2014 is going to the well deserving Help For Heroes charity.  So whether you stay with us for Armed Forces Day or whether it is later on in the year, you will still be able to help and do your bit for our Armed Forces!!
