Cycling In & Around Whitby Holiday Park

Whitby Holiday Park is a great location to ‘get on your bike’ and discover the local area.  If you don’t have your own bike, just 2 miles away in Hawsker is ‘Trailways’ Cycle Hire, where you can hire a bike from around £8.50 per day.

Trailways is situated on the old train track running from Scarborough, through Cloughton, Ravenscar, Robins Hood Bay, Hawsker and on to Whitby.  It was originally constructed in 1885 and the last train ran along the track in 1965, leaving a perfect route for cycling off road, with the sea on one side and the moors on the other.

The old train track route is 21 miles each way, almost traffic free and mostly flat although it is slightly uphill as you go towards Ravenscar.  There are occasional points where you have to go across a minor road, so obviously care would need to be taken with children.

You can pick up the cycle track just across the road from the cycle hire shop for a lovely ride into Robin Hoods Bay, which is a quaint fishing village with lots of lovely cottages, shops and cafes leading down a very steep hill to the beach at the bottom.  Probably best to leave your bike at the top and walk down unless you have very reliable brakes!

Apparently Robins Hoods Bay was once a smugglers port and many of the cottages had hidden passageways and interconnecting doors to hide their loot!
