Whitby Holiday Park and the Tale of Dracula!

Whitby Holiday Park and the Tale of Dracula!

Whitby Holiday Park, situated close to the beach where Dracula first came ashore, is an ideal base for any Gothic literature or Dracula enthusiasts to visit the many locations in Whitby that feature in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

The most prominent landmark in Whitby is the ruin of Whitby Abbey (only a short walk from Whitby Holiday Park!), which was sacked by the Danes. As Stoker writes “it is a most noble ruin, of immense size, and full of beautiful and romantic bits….between it and the town there is another church, the parish one, round which is a big graveyard, all full of tombstones”.

It was the summer of 1890 whilst Stoker was holidaying in Whitby that he came across the name that would soon become his leading characters name and also the name of his novel. On a trip to the local library he came across a book which included a short section about a man who fought against the Turks who went by the name of Dracula, the meaning of which is “devil”.

Starting out from Whitby Holiday Park it’s only a hop, skip and a jump to the imposing ruins of Whitby Abbey and the dark silhouette of St Mary’s Church which sits brooding atop the winding 199 steps which rise up from the cobbled streets below. One needs only to experience the view on a day when the fret clings to the town as it rolls off the sea to appreciate the macabre effect this can have on the imagination.

Be careful if you are around the Abbey on a night time as folklore has it that  this is where Dracula’s grave is located and can often be seen lurking around the benches where he had his first encounter with Lucy in the novel.

As you meander down the 199 steps you will soon find yourself on Tate Hill beach where the Demeter ran aground and Dracula made his first steps on English soil.

Once on Tate Hill beach you will be able to look across the harbour to the west side of the town and look up onto the West Cliff where it is believed Stoker spent his time when visiting Whitby. From here he would have had a prime view down into the town, the harbour and across to the cobbled streets of the old east side (where you will find Whitby Holiday Park)

On the west side of the town on Marine Parade you will find a tourist attraction dedicated to the tale of Dracula. For anyone that is not scared by the tale of Dracula, this is a must! If you can walk from one end to the other without looking back or running scared from Dracula himself, then you have some something that we could not accomplish here in the office at Whitby Holiday Park!

Foe those of you who are too scared to walk round the Dracula Experience, why not try the hunt for Dracula Ghost Walk. The meeting point is at the Whale Bones on West Cliff.

Cycling In & Around Whitby Holiday Park

Whitby Holiday Park is a great location to ‘get on your bike’ and discover the local area.  If you don’t have your own bike, just 2 miles away in Hawsker is ‘Trailways’ Cycle Hire, where you can hire a bike from around £8.50 per day.

Trailways is situated on the old train track running from Scarborough, through Cloughton, Ravenscar, Robins Hood Bay, Hawsker and on to Whitby.  It was originally constructed in 1885 and the last train ran along the track in 1965, leaving a perfect route for cycling off road, with the sea on one side and the moors on the other.

The old train track route is 21 miles each way, almost traffic free and mostly flat although it is slightly uphill as you go towards Ravenscar.  There are occasional points where you have to go across a minor road, so obviously care would need to be taken with children.

You can pick up the cycle track just across the road from the cycle hire shop for a lovely ride into Robin Hoods Bay, which is a quaint fishing village with lots of lovely cottages, shops and cafes leading down a very steep hill to the beach at the bottom.  Probably best to leave your bike at the top and walk down unless you have very reliable brakes!

Apparently Robins Hoods Bay was once a smugglers port and many of the cottages had hidden passageways and interconnecting doors to hide their loot!

Whitby and Photography

WHITBY AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Situated high up on the cliff top overlooking Saltwick Bay and the North Sea, Whitby Holiday Park is the ideal base for anyone who has an interest in photography.  Situated where we are, the holiday park is surrounded by many natural beauty spots where you can spend many an hour just snapping away taking photo after photo after photo.

Now if you’re like me and stuck in an office six days a week, you might think it difficult to find time to go out and take some photos.  Well, it is and it isn’t!  I tend to take mine when I’m out on an evening or on my day off when I’m walking the dog.  I even took one out of the window half way up the stairs at home because the colour of the night sky was just amazing!!  And I’m no photographer!! I don’t have one of these fancy cameras that can do anything and everything.  All I’m using at the moment is my HTC ONE X smart phone.  So definitely nothing fancy, but the quality of the photos seems to be brilliant.

Whitby is home to the well known photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe who’s photographs have won many awards all over the world.  You can walk into almost any shop, pub, restaurant or café and you will see many of his photos lining the walls giving us an insight into what life was like in Whitby during the reign of Queen Victoria.  He built up a business in the town which rooted him to Whitby and the surrounding area.  By photographing the ordinary people that he knew well he built up a most complete and revealing picture of a late Victorian town and of the people who lived and worked there.

I am in no way what so ever comparing myself to Frank Meadow Sutcliffe (he was a professional, and I am not!) But it is easy to understand once you have visited Whitby, why you would want to become a photographer, or like me, simply just take a photo here and there because the scenery is just so amazing.

One of Whitby’s most famous icons, and possibly one of its most photographed icons, is Whitby Abbey.  In Frank Meadow Sutcliffe’s time, people were farming on the lands around the abbey, which can be seen in the following photograph:

And what a picture this is!  I certainly can’t imagine taking a photo like this.
I was walking in to town from the Holiday Park one day along the cliffs.  It was late in the afternoon and it was early on in the year so it was still getting dark early on in the afternoon.  I was not far from the abbey when I had to stop and take a photo(again on my smart phone) because there was the most amazing sunset behind the abbey surrounding it in wonderful purples, oranges and reds.

This is the photo I managed to get and I was very pleased with the outcome, especially as it was taken on my phone after a long day in the office.

I also help out in one of the local pubs in town a couple of nights each week and was looking out the window the other night and found another perfect picture opportunity.  So I stood in the pub doorway with my phone in hand and took several pictures, uncertain of how they would turn out.  Below is the one which I think is best.  It shows Whitby Harbour late on a Thursday afternoon, just as the sun is starting to set.  What made me most want to take the photo was the reflection on the water of the surrounding houses, the pier and all the little sailing boats floating on the water.

As I said earlier, I’m no photographer, but yet again I was very pleased with the outcome of this photo and have had some lovely comments off friends and family who have seen it.  A suggestion was also made that I should by myself one of these fancy cameras and take it up as a hobby!! My answer to that was I’ll think about it!!

I know at the moment we have a photography competition going on at Whitby Holiday Park so it would be interesting to see what pictures other people have taken of the park or of the surrounding area.  Now I know that I’m not supposed to enter the competition, what with working in the office as you’ll all think it’s a fix, but I may just squeeze a couple of entries in and see what people say.

So to any of you who are staying on the park at the moment, or who will be coming to stay with us in the coming weeks, get out there with your fancy cameras or just your smart phone, like me, and get snapping!!  You never know, you could take the winning photo and have it displayed for everyone to see.

STEVE’S CHANGE OF LIFE SINCE HE HIT THE BIG 50

Most of my life I have had sports bikes.

On my 50th birthday my wife decided it was time for me to slow down if she was going on the back of me.

We decided to go for a Harley Davidson 1200 Sporster to cruise around the coast on sunny evenings.

I’ve gone from a heavy goods trucker most of my working life to maintenance on a holiday park which I am really enjoying and meeting people.  I always like the Holiday Park to look clean and tidy so often I am out on the grass cutter or repairing things around the park.  I still get the chance to manoeuvre and site big 35ft static caravans.  This is small compared to 100ft trailers on the back of me.    All I can say my life has really changed and slowed down to what I was used to. I spent many long hours on the road travelling all around the country with my truck on heavy goods, sometimes 15 hours a day and even up at silly hours in the morning.

If there is anymore Harley Davidson fans out there it is a lovely drive to Whitby Holiday Park so it would be great to see you all and meet up for a chat.

A RECEPTIONIST LIFE FOR ME!!

A Receptionist Life for Me!

6.30 am and my alarm starts ringing. Its time to get up and start my day! After doing all the usual morning chores at home, including walking the dog! - I head on over to work to open up for 8.30am.

As I enter the office the Manager is always there to greet all staff and customers alike.

With the windows and door open to make the office more inviting, I switch the computers on and take the night time answer machine off ready to answer all the incoming calls of the day!

As the hours tick on by I busy myself with answering the telephone and taking booking after booking for our touring field – with the weather being predicted to be the hottest weekend of the year!

The odd maintenance job crops up and like all reception staff we contact the maintenance staff to let them know of the job that needs to be done, after all the key to maintaining our customers holiday as a happy experience is to communicate and act as efficiently as possible.

Before I know it, it is dinner time and off I go to walk my dog and have some lunch.

After we have had all our lunches its time to get the office looking spick and span with a polish and a hoover. I polish and my colleague hoovers! That's that job done for the day!

Booking in time for our customers who are staying in our Hire Fleet comes around and we have a happy stream of customers booking in. even though they have been held up by a traffic jam on the A64 everyone is in a happy jolly mood. It helps that the booking in procedure is pretty straightforward for them!

After most of our customers have booked in its time to do the daily banking. With that done its home time and time to hand over to the touring warden for the evening shift. I communicate with him to let him know who is still to come in for both touring and hiring and any other message we might have for him.

With that I switch my computer off for another day and head on home for the night!

Having worked here for the passed 10 years I would say that everyone works together as a team. It is one of the friendliest places that I have worked. Sue the manager always makes sure that the team are well looked after and her door is always open if you ever need anyone to talk to. Not many people can say that they have a manager like we have here at Whitby!

It doesn't seem like two minutes since I joined the team, but as they say time fly's by when you’re having fun!

My Time So Far........

Hi, and welcome to Whitby Holiday Park.

My name is Kayleigh and I work in Reception. You will see me sat behind my desk in front of the door as you walk past reception. I have worked at Whitby Holiday Park now for two and a half years and have loved every minute.

I remember my first day back in April 2011.  I started two weeks before Easter so you can imagine how busy it was in the office with last minute touring and accommodation bookings being taken.  So much for a nice gentle introduction into the world of holiday makers!!  As I arrived I was greeted by the other girls in reception and by Sue, the General Manager (who you’ll always see walking round the park making sure that everything is alright).

No time for talking as it is a busy day so once all the introductions are made it’s time to sit down and learn the ropes!!  First thing on the job list is learning the booking system, a frightening thought for some but after an hour of hard study and a few attempts at making a booking, I was ready to answer those phone calls (as the phone had been ringing none stop!)  10 minutes later and my first booking was done!  I had just enough time to get that first booking filed away before I was on to my next one.  Before I knew it I was being told that it was time to hand over to the warden as it was home time.  I could not believe how fast the day had gone.

Before I knew it my first week as a receptionist at Whitby Holiday Park was over and I couldn’t wait to see what the next week was going to bring.

Then Easter arrived along with an influx of touring caravans, motor homes and people who had booked stays in our static caravans.  So my first busy week/ weekend after only two weeks of being here, nothing like being thrown in at the deep end!!  It had also given nice weather for the whole of the Easter holidays so I was just about ready for whatever was to be thrown my way.

12 noon arrives and so does the first touring caravan, followed by at least three more.  So one by one we got them all checked in and directed to their pitches.  Next up was a static, but unfortunately it was not quite ready,(plus check in time for accommodation is not until 4pm) so they went for a wander and I think ended up in the club house for a cheeky afternoon pint!!  The rest of the day continued without any problems and by the time it was time to go home, just about everyone was in.

On Easter Sunday we had a fun / sales day where there was activities held outside on the green for all the kids (big kids included) as well as stalls to raise money for the Great North Air Ambulance, and stalls advertising what static caravans we had on site for sale at the time.  Again the weather was lovely so as you can imagine the site was full of people not only staying on the site, but there were plenty of people walking through on the Cleveland Way walk heading either to Robin Hoods Bay or Whitby.

Before I knew it the Easter holidays were over and the park went quiet for a couple of weeks before the first of two Bank Holidays hit us!!

By this time I had settled in nicely and was getting along well with all my colleagues and was starting to get to know some of the owners and seasonal tourers on site.

Then summer was upon us and it was constantly busy for the full six weeks with people passing through the office all day asking questions and getting booked up for later in the year.

It wasn’t long before it was the end of the season and time to say bye to all the touring customers and seasonal pitch owners with a gothic themed party in the club, where there was plenty of dancing, drinking and eating done!!

With one year over it was time to start getting the office and park ready for next season.  Winter is a busy time in the office and with it being my first one I was not sure what to expect, but still every day the phone was ringing with people wanting to make bookings for next year already!

So last years bookings and paper work were being filed away making room for those who were already planning ahead and for the paper work that was to come.

The 1st March was soon upon us and it was soon back to business as usual.  I had now been here a year and was looking forward to seeing what this next year had in store at Whitby Holiday Park.

I soon discovered that many of those coming to stay on the site were returning customers and I was slowly starting to recognise some of those that come all the time, (because there is that many of you!)

We had a good start to the year weather wise which is unusual for March and April which meant that you all wanted to visit on the same days!  Some of you we had to unfortunately turn away as we could not fit you on as all of our touring pitches and static caravans were full!(Which is a good thing for the park!)  But you all came back in droves the following weekend.

Unfortunately by Easter the weather had turned and that seemed to be it for the rest of the year.  It had seemed we had had our summer at the beginning of the year.  However, it didn’t seem to stop you all ringing up and booking your stays with us!  Although the weather wasn’t very nice, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and there was laughter heard throughout the park (and not just from the office!!)

We started the summer by joining in with the rest of the country to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.  We decorated the park and all of you dressed up in your finest fancy dress to see who would be crowned the best dressed Queen in our fancy dress competition which was held in the club.  As I remember a fun night was had by all and a winner was crowned.

As this was to be the summer of the Olympics, we held our own little mini Olympics, where the kids in kids club did all sorts of mini athletics out on the green and kept all the adults entertained.

With summer well under way it was soon time for the annual Whitby Regatta, which meant that once again the park was full.  By 2pm on the Monday afternoon everyone was lining the cliff top in anticipation for the Red Arrows who were soon to be doing their last display.  It only took one person to point them out in the distance before the usual ooohhhs and aahhhs could be heard all along the cliff top.  Yet another amazing display by the red arrows which was unfortunately to be their last at the Whitby Regatta.  By 10pm everyone was again lining the cliff top waiting for the firework display to begin, and what a way to end a brilliant weekend!!  And thankfully the weather even turned out nice!!!

With the height of summer pretty much over and done with, the seasonal tourers were packing up their motor homes and tourers only to return back for a weekend break now that the kids were back to school.

September arrived and what a change from the last few weeks.  Although the park was still busy, it was certainly a lot quieter!!

September was soon over and done with and we were into our last month for you tourers.  October arrived with great anticipation as all staff, static  caravan owners and seasonal tourers were all looking forward to the end of season party.  Christmas was the theme for this year and as you can imagine there were some fantastic costumes.  We had everything from pantomime characters, to Santa’s little helpers and even the Christmas Turkey!!!  Yet again another fantastic night was had by all.

Once everyone had recovered from this, it was soon time again to get those Goth costumes out as the main annual Goth weekend was soon upon us!!  Now if you haven’t been to Whitby for this weekend I recommend that it is something that you do.  Not only is it a fantastic and busy weekend, but some of the outfits that can be seen around the town are absolutely amazing!!  You cannot even begin to imagine the cost and effort that people put into making these outfits!!  Absolutely spectacular!!

And once again it was soon time to close the touring field for another year (because the weather was that bad) and was time to start getting things ready for another fun filled year at Whitby Holiday Park!!

You might all think that once you have all gone it is a quiet time in the office!!  How wrong can you be!!  For us, this is when the work really starts going.  We have to sort through all the paper work from the year just gone; get all the paper work ready for the year to come; and of course get any maintenance work done that cannot be done through out the year.  All of this is being done whilst still answering the phones and taking your bookings for next year!!  So not only is it a busy time, but it is also a stressful time for everyone in the office!!( Which is why we all look so tired when it is time to reopen the park in March!!)

With Christmas and New Year out of the way it’s a hectic couple of months making sure that everything is in order and finished before we open.

And before we know it the 1st March is upon us and its time to do it all again…………..

A Day In The Life Of A Touring Warden

I lift my head off the pillow and listen again….yes, something is moving around outside.  Just outside my window; something or someone is rattling papers and banging about.  What on earth…?  Then it hit me – the seagulls have struck again!  Muttering thanks to the thoughtless camper who left their rubbish out for the seagulls to investigate, I rolled out of bed and quickly pulled on some clothes.

Reaching for my trusty rubber gloves and a carrier bag, I let myself quietly out my motorhome so as not to wake up the sleeping campers, and survey the mess of old teabags, bones, tin cans and soggy rubbish that the seagulls had strewn around.  Trying not to think too much about what I was picking up, I quickly collect up as much of the mess as I can.  Eeugh!

Within minutes I’m back in bed and the seagulls have departed.  A quick look at my clock tells me it is not even 5 o’clock yet and the sun is shining brightly but I’m determined to grab another couple of hours sleep before work.

Later on in the day and it’s time for work.  I fire up my trusty tractor/lawnmower and drive down to Reception to sign in.  First job is down to the children’s play park to check the equipment over and sweep out the toddler park.  This done I jump back on my trusty tractor and work my way round the touring park collecting all the wood that we’ve used to get the campers’ vans level.  Next stop is to pick up some black bags and my grabber to start collecting all the litter from around the park.  That Whitby Wind has a lot to answer for!

Right, I’ve had my lunch and everywhere is tidy; time to welcome the next batch of campers.  Down to Reception to meet my first customer – a small campervan on a level pitch: easy!  Next a large caravan, driven by an harassed lady who has just towed for 3 hours for the first time alone.  The thought of reversing the van onto a pitch is making her panicky, but I reassure her I can help her get the van into position easily.  She follows me up to the touring field and we soon have her parked up on pitch and level, ready to get the kettle on!

My next customer is a 26ft Motorhome and brand new!  It’s the first time the owners have ever used it and they are new to motorhoming, so I show them where the elson and water points are and where to empty their waste water.  We chat for a few minutes about some problems with their motorhome, then its back down to the office for the next customer.

As I wiz round the site on my tractor, children wave to me and men look on wishing they had a job driving round on a tractor in the sunshine too!  But I promise it’s not all fun.  When you’ve had to unblock the toilets again for the third time in one day, it's pouring down with rain or you smile and greet a camper who’s just driven for 3 and a half hours and is tired and fed up and just wants to be sitting outside his van with a drink, you really wouldn’t think it’s such a great job!

WHITBY HISTORY

WHY NOT ENJOY A WALK AROUND WHITBY MUSEUM AND FIND OUT ALL THE INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT OUR PICTURESQUE TOWN.
WITH ITS ALLEYWAYS AND COVES YOU CAN STILL GET A FEEL FOR HOW WHITBY WAS IN YEARS GONE BY.

HERE IS SOME OF OUR HISTORY:

WHITBY HAS A COMBINED MARITIME, MINERAL AND TOURIST HERITAGE AND IS HOME TO THE RUINS OF WHITBY ABBEY WHERE CAEDMON, THE EARLIEST ENGLISH POET, LIVED.
THE FISHING PORT EMERGED DURING THE MIDDLE AGES AND DEVELOPED IMPORTANT WHALING AND HERRING FLEETS. CAPTAIN COOK LEARNED HIS SEAMANSHIP IN WHITBY.

TOURISM STARTED IN THE GEORGIAN TIMES AND CONTINUED TO DEVELOP WITH THE COMING OF THE RAILWAY IN 1839. OTHER ATTRACTIONS SUCH AS THE PUBLISHING OF THE HORROR NOVEL DRACULA BROUGHT TOURISTS FROM FAR AND WIDE.

JET AND ALUM WERE MINED LOCALLY, AND WHITBY JET, WHICH WAS MINED BY THE ROMANS AND VICTORIANS BECAME FASHIONABLE IN 19TH CENTURY.

THE EARLIEST RECORD OF A PERMANENT SETTLEMENT IS IN 656 WHEN STREONSHAL WAS THE PLACE WHERE OSWY, CHRISTIAN KING OF NORTHUMBRIA, FOUNDED THE FIRST ABBEY, UNDER THE ABBESS, HILDA. IN 867 THE MONASTERY WAS DESTROYED BY VIKING RAIDERS AND WAS RE-FOUNDED IN 1078. IT WAS IN THIS PERIOD THAT THE TOWN GAINED ITS CURRENT NAME “WHITBY” (FROM “WHITE SETTLEMENT” IN OLD NORSE).

IN THE FOLLOWING CENTURIES WHITBY FUNCTIONED AS A FISHING SETTLEMENT, UNTIL IN 18TH CENTURY IT DEVELOPED AS A PORT AND CENTRE FOR SHIPBUILDING AND WHALING, IT TRADED IN LOCALLY MINED ALUM AND THE MANUFACTURE OF WHITBY JET JEWELLRY.

SO WHILE OUT EXPLORING WHY NOT TREAT YOURSELF OR YOUR LOVED ONE TO A PIECE OF WHITBY JET JEWELLRY AS A BEAUTIFUL REMINDER OF YOUR STAY HERE WITH US AT WHITBY HOLIDAY PARK.
